Tapas, Pinchos, Montaditos: The Great Spanish Snack Showdown!

Updated: Oct 9

Tapas, Pinchos, Montaditos. They all sound delicious, but are they the same thing? Spoiler alert: they’re not! In this week’s post, we’re diving into the origins, differences, and varieties of these Spanish classics. Buckle up—your taste buds are in for a treat!

First Things First: They’re Not the Same!

Let’s clear the air: Tapas, Pinchos, and Montaditos might seem similar, but they each have their own special flair. So, let’s break it down!

Tapa: Imagine a small, delectable portion of food served on a dish, often with your drink. Tapas are the quintessential Spanish snack, and guess what? They usually come for free with your beverage. Talk about a win-win!

Montadito: This is a slice of ham, chorizo, or other tasty goodies perched on a slice of bread. Think of it as a gourmet mini-sandwich. Montaditos are perfect for those who love their snacks with a bit more substance.

Pincho: A Pincho (or Pintxo, if you’re hanging out in the Basque Country) is a portion of food served on a skewer or toothpick. Created in a San Sebastián bar in the 1930s, Pinchos are often elaborate and fancy—like Tapas’ posh cousin.

Origins and Etymology: A Delicious History Lesson

Montadito: The word “Montadito” comes from “montado,” meaning “mounted.” This tasty treat has been around since the 15th century when people began “mounting” ingredients on slices of bread for a quick and easy bite.

Pincho: “Pincho” means “spike,” and it’s also known as “Pintxo” in Euskera (the Basque language). Legend has it that Pinchos were invented in a San Sebastián bar in the 1930s to lure in customers with their irresistible appeal.

Tapa: The term “Tapa” literally means “lid” or “cover,” stemming from the verb “tapar,” meaning “to cover.” The most charming story? King Alfonso XIII was served wine covered with a slice of ham to keep out the flies. He enjoyed it so much, he kept asking for more. And that’s how Tapas became a thing!
